At the Edge of Borges

A poem from the foundational Spanish modernist Jorge Guillén.

Editor’s Note: The following poem is excerpted from “A Compass on the Navigable Sea: 100 Years of World Literature” edited by Daniel Simon and from Restless Books.

Encyclopedia Britannica

I owe the discovery of Uqbar to the conjunction of a mirror and an encyclopedia.
—Ficciones, “Tlön Uqbar, Orbis Tertius”

Let us dream, soul, let us read!

Among figures and signs
Let us dream—in memory—
Chess, alchemy, kabbalah,
Palimpsest, labyrinth.

Vast garden: library.

Listening, conversing
With faqih, with astrologer
To accumulate a language
Where one might live far away.

Mysterious encyclopedia!

Humble Irreality

“He saw dog, he saw a van or lorry in a dead-end alleyway, he saw the horizon, he saw a silvery horse lapping at the rank water of a puddle.
—”Death and the Compass”

I

I saw the no man’s land, neither suburb
Nor countryside, in a murky gray twilight.
Without feeling the pull of the horizon,
I saw a dog sniffing through a rubble heap
For the last edible scrap of waste.
I saw a rusted, unused railway track.
I saw a famished cat drinking
The sun’s reflection sun and its agony
Over rainwater now pooled in a puddle.

Everything was in an unframed painting.

II

I don’t know if in painting I succeed or fail.
I bought the oil painting.
With a horse
I dreamed that from that canvas without a subject
It emerged, solitary as a goat.
Also remote when seen up close.
More: I dreamed of the water in a pool.
Now the wandering figure leans there
To quench its sad equine thirst.

Ay, the horse vanished from the canvas.
With words I seek it—and do find it.

“In Praise of Darkness”

This seer in mist
Who wanders, distant, melancholic,
Proposing words
Of light from within the shadow,
This modern southerner
With such new, millenary penumbras:
maker and speaker.

Al Margen de Borges

Encyclopaedia Britannica

I.

Proponiendo vocablos
De luz desde la sombra,
Este moderno austral
Con tan nuevas penumbras milenarias:
Hacedor y dicente.
