Looking Up

A river and its teeth are talking

about you.

The water’s confidences broach

in pencil. The sky this morning

wants to be the river.

You don’t blame it.

You dream in pencil. Your teeth

pour like salt

from your mouth.

Berlin

In Berlin next time

I’ll wear black

right down to my socks. My sweater

invulnerable as tarmac. It won’t matter

what mottles underneath.

And those ankle boots, elfin

and butch, that artists rock.

My cords, they’ll shimmer so

in them she can see herself.

All black, you know—no one

can touch you. Everyone

will want to.
